Are you looking to create a small office at home but not sure where to squeeze in the furniture? You don’t have to have a dedicated room; it’s enough if you have an empty nook. With some thoughtful planning and creativity, you can turn pretty much any space into a home office.

In this article we’ll cover:

  • What is Biophilic Design
  • The Benefits of Biophilic Office Design
  • How to Create a Small Biophilic Office at Home

What is Biophilic Office Design

Biophilic Interior Design means incorporating nature into our indoor environment. It focuses on creating a calming space with visual connection with nature while improving well-being, health and productivity.

Benefits of Biophilic Office Design

Did you know that Biophilic office design can enhance your overall wellbeing? Research has shown that Biophilic design works wonders when it comes to increasing productivity, health, mood and creativity by bringing nature indoors through several elements.

Usually, when we think of creating a calming natural space, the first thought is calm neutral colours, simple furniture, and pretty much playing safe. But how about we have some fun with the design. Let’s experiment this time with bold colours.

As an example, I’ve designed this urban jungle-themed Biophilic office. Within this particular one, I’m bringing the natural world into the built environment through shapes, colours, images, greenery and materials.

Jungle-themed wallpaper acts as an image of nature, and it allows us to experience the natural world visually. Any image of plants, landscape, water or animals is a form of contact between us and nature.

The industrial desk made of solid iroko wood and mid-century modern chair made of solid teak and woven cane, make a perfect design marriage. Natural materials like wood and rattan provide indirect contact with nature.

The handwoven jute rug and wicker pendant with its organic shape and natural colour bring physical and psychological exposure to nature, evoking a variety of senses.

Last but not least, a fiddle leaf fig tree as a dedicated representative of a living plant, providing a visual and physical experience of nature.

Hope this design inspires you to play more with colours and patterns. Who knows what you might come up with during the design process. Have fun decorating! :)
